Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) was officially released in India on 26th April 2007. The launch took place at the Inter Continental in Connaught Place, Delhi. The high-definition gaming console that includes the Blu-ray disc drive and 60GB of storage space was launched at a whopping price of Rs 39,990 (approx $850). Powered by the IBM-designed Cell microprocessor as its CPU, the 60GB launch edition of PS3 also included built in Wi-Fi adapter, 4 USB ports and memory card slots.
On 26th November 2007, Sony discontinued sales of the 60GB version and introduced the much-cheaper 40GB edition of the PS3 in India. But like most things Sony, the price drop came at a cost. The new model was no longer backwards compatible with the PS2 titles. A couple of USB ports and memory card slots were no longer a part of the new PS3. The price though was much more afforable and at Rs 24,990 (approx $550), the PS3 could finally give the XBox 360 and Nitendo Wii tough competition. On the eve of Christmas 2008, Sony further reduced the PS3 Price in India by Rs 2,000 ($45). As of New year 2009, the PS3 was priced at a very reasonable Rs 22,990 (approx $500).
On February 1st 2009, Sony introduced the 80GB edition of PS3 for the very first time in India. The already popular gaming console came bundled with a Dual Shock 3 controller and a copy of Resistence 2. The PS3 for double disk-space and Resistence 2 would currently cost you Rs 25,990 (approx $550). Optionally you could also buy the PS3 with MotorStorm Pacific Rift (instead of Resistence 2), although the availablity would vary between regions.
